About the gallery

The Sokkelplan (The Sculpture Gallery for The Hague) after a concept by P. Struycken from 1990) is a gallery of sculptures on an oval granite pedestal, placed every 25 meters in the pedestrian area of the center of The Hague: Grote Marktstraat, Kalvermarkt and Spui. The pedestal plan means that forty Dutch sculptors have been or will be invited to make a sculpture for the sculpture route.

P. Struycken introduced the pedestal because it literally and figuratively forms a connection between the urban space and the sculpture. Because every artist has to adhere to the same measurements, the diversity nevertheless acquires a coherence that can maintain itself on an urban development scale. The pedestal was designed by ceramicist Geert Lap. The text boards at the pedestal sculptures were designed by designer Rudo Hartman.
