About the installation
The New Stemwijzermarkt in the House of Europe, developed by Studio Renate Boere and Martine Weijs for Prodemos.
The Stemwijzermarkt is an interactive object that introduces citizens to issues concerning Europe in a fun way.
In the market stall you will find 24 different types of fruit and vegetables, each corresponding to a statement or question. You collect it in your shopping basket, which is divided into a section for ‘agree’ and ‘disagree’. Then you take the shopping basket to the checkout where you can pay for your products. You will see the result on the receipt.
About the Design
Emerging from a query on informing citizens differently about politics, the installations challenge conventional media and campaign influences. Developed by Studio Renate Boere and graphic design students from the Willem de Kooning Academy, they explore novel communication forms—from visual prompts to color psychology and candidate aesthetics. Complementing this, StemWijzerwinkel and StemWijzermarkt allow participants to craft political preferences using grocery products as placeholders, such as fruits and vegetables, each representing a stance. The tactile experience encourages reflection on personal politics through interactive engagement.
StemWijzerwinkel and StemWijzermarkt redefine political engagement through creativity and critical reflection, innovatively informing and involving citizens in the political process.
