About the book
Irrational and free associative work is, more than ever, an important part of the creative process. We are quickly inclined to reach for the computer when we start creating an idea and a design or get inspiration for a new work. That means that we start with language; typing a word into Google. This results in a selection of possibilities that Google proposes to us.
About the Design
In the 1920s, the Dadaists showed that the opposite, namely taking the visual as a starting point, can lead to extremely interesting work that still fascinates and inspires. They created collages and new typographic and visual stories with fragments from magazines and newspapers.
Free association by combining found images and texts from magazines and newspapers produces unexpected subjects and themes that you would never have thought of when trying to collect images via Google. These finds create visual stories that can be an important basis for new work.
From the urgency of making and the confrontation with complex problems in today’s society, 24 students of the Willem de Kooning Academy worked on this project for a week under the guidance of Renate Boere. The result is a special book, filled with modifications to faces and bodies, collapsed buildings and bombed cities, religious symbolism, nudity, propaganda, typography, historical and iconic images, distortions and bizarre combinations.
