About the project

(Press release June 4, 2002)

exhibition in Zapf Dingbats

For quite some time now, (graphic) designer Bastiaan de Boer has been working on the subject of ‘colour’. A theoretical colour study that has resulted in a three-dimensional colour model.

“Dry theory – nobody is waiting for that. A theoretical story can be very interesting but at the same time it is deadly boring for a gallery visitor. A visitor wants to be amazed. The first impression counts, the underlying theory comes second.”

To break away from that dry theory, De Boer asked co-designer Renate Boere at the beginning of this year to create an exhibition as a duo ‘boeredeboer’. Not about the color model itself, images and theory can already be viewed on the ‘Bascolor’ website, but with the color model.

The starting point was to create an exciting and stimulating exhibition, in which intuitive inspirations or insights will be central. In this way, the exhibited will transcend theory and in which the created will stand on its own. And perhaps the theory may even be forgotten.

About the Design

The first step in the project consisted of (photographically) visualizing ‘colors’. However, not in a literal sense. The ‘colors’ from the color model were a guideline. The ‘subject’ was –just like the spontaneously entered photo locations– chosen intuitively on the spot.

From the proceeds of five photo sessions – a total of about three hundred photos – we eventually selected six ‘colours’. These six photos were digitally edited (the number of colours was limited to 59 in Photoshop) and were then – greatly enlarged – printed on canvas and stretched. The seventh ‘canvas ‘Swimming pool A, BLU, 0080FF’ was an (in Illustrator produced) enlargement of a detail from ‘Swimming pool B, BLU, 0080FF’, on which the names of the colours were indicated in the individual ‘pixels’.

The color palette consisted of:

• The 19 ‘basic colours’ from the model or the ‘nameable colour points’ [WHI, YEL, etc.] of which one [BRN2] was not included in the colour palette, so 18.

• The 39 ‘intermediate colours’ [whi-yel, whi-pin, etc.].

• Plus two more grey values, namely #404040 and #C0C0C0. (18 basic colours + 39 intermediate colours + 2 grey values = 59 colours)
