About the event
This year, the fourth edition of the Haarlemse Lente will take place from 13 to 15 March 2015.Following the successful ‘Form Follows Fiction’, the Haarlem art institutions are once again joining forces on a thematic level. The Haarlemse Lente is the Haarlem starting point of the ‘ Netherlands Flanders year ‘, and therefore focuses on dialogue and research into new and existing artistic relations between Flanders and Haarlem. Eleven Haarlem art institutions will establish connections and enter into collaborations with Flemish artists and art institutions.
This year, the programmed exhibitions and activities will be presented under the artistic-content theme ‘ Bourgeois Rebellion ‘. This theme is a contradiction in terms and will be an incentive to investigate the meaning of ‘bourgeoisie’ in our current time, and its relationship with progressive contemporary art. It is a big wink to the bourgeois associations that people have with a respectable city like Haarlem, in which current, contemporary culture traditionally has a hard time. At the same time, it is also a pointer to the, from a Dutch perspective, relatively large support that adventurous art enjoys in Flanders among private collectors, the bourgeoisie of today.

“Haarlemse Lente challenges traditional perceptions of contemporary culture in respectable cities.”

“This year's theme encourages a re-examination of the role of bourgeoisie in modern art.”
