About the Design

‘Beyond Design: The Game of Social Solutions’ maintains visual consistency with the book by featuring concentric shapes. These shapes symbolize the spreading of ideas, creating social influence, and elevating concepts through the game’s 10 straightforward steps. The concentric pattern is both ornamental and functional, forming the game’s distinctive typeface and visual elements.

Designing the information in this game was a crucial challenge. Studio Renate Boere has developed a thoughtful design that ensures the rules and steps are concise, logical and easy to follow. The back of the game box provides a short explanation of the game and its purpose, allowing players to grasp the essentials before opening it. Inside, the box contains step cards, information cards, an instruction paper, and worksheets.

The instruction paper offers detailed yet concise information on the game’s goals, requirements, preparation, gameplay, and assessment. The worksheets provide step-by-step instructions and space for players to jot down ideas during brainstorming. After step 10, the worksheet also guides players in assessing and judging the results of their pitch, outlining the necessary qualities for a successful project. For design educators, these worksheets can serve as guidelines for assignments and evaluation criteria.

The game also includes 10 step cards and 4 decks of information cards, corresponding to the steps that require additional details. Each information card has a number on the back indicating its step, and a keyword or symbol on the front representing a topic, target audience, visual association, or stakeholder. The step cards are designed to be concise and easy to understand for players of all ages, ensuring smooth gameplay without the need for extensive reading.

“The game offers a straightforward 10-step method to initiate and develop projects, making Boere’s extensive experience accessible to all.”

“Beyond Design facilitates quick idea generation and collaborative problem-solving.”
