About the prize

The Ouborg Prize is the Hague city prize for visual arts, named after the Hague artist Pieter Ouborg (1893-1956). The prize has been awarded annually since 1990 and every two years since 1997 to a Hague artist whose oeuvre is of great significance both locally and internationally. The award consists of a sum of money plus a presentation in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and a publication provided by Stroom Den Haag.

The winner 2007

‘The jury is of the opinion that Zeger Reyers has built up an impressive oeuvre despite his relatively young age. An oeuvre that is diverse in its forms of expression and cannot be sharply demarcated, but has a strong coherence in its theme and choice of subject. Thanks to his substantive approach, Reyers speaks a universal language and creates recognition. With his imagination he creates wonder and this forms the starting point for reflection, awareness and insight in the viewer’. (Arno van Roosmalen)

About the Design

The book was created in collaboration with Zeger Reyers. What do I want to tell about my work and how do I want to tell this story were important questions during the many meetings with Zeger. From the very beginning we agreed that the tactility of the book had to play an important role. This resulted in five different types of paper, some of which refer to the transience of Zeger’s work. The format is also an experience. Zeger’s works require a grand gesture. Zeger’s materials and working method actually contrast with this grand gesture. They are often processes that have arisen naturally and slowly continue their process. Because of this contradiction I chose to place the title almost screaming on the cover while it asks for silence.

Both the cover and the format refer to a (scientific) magazine. The temporality of a magazine refers to the temporality of Zeger’s work.

The fragment/moment that Zeger chooses to capture his work is expressed in the ‘hole’ on the cover. Zeger’s ‘eye’ lets you into his world of experience.
