About the exhibition

Museumstraat-Voorstraat is an exhibition by the cbk Dordrecht in collaboration with the Dordrechts Museum. It is an exhibition based on the artist street names in Dordrecht. In this exhibition, residents of the streets get the opportunity to see a work by the artist their street is named after; in addition, it gives other residents and visitors of the city the opportunity to see paintings by famous artists and masters that are not shown so often.

About the Design

The starting point for the project style of Museumstraat-Voorstraat is that different target groups are attracted to an exhibition of old masters through an educational, playful approach. The basis for the design of the invitation, poster and advertisements is a memory game (1,2). By presenting the works of the artists in the form of a memory game, you combine the artist with the street. You make the artist of the street visual, as it were. In addition, the invitation contains questions about the works. The answers to these questions can be found in the streets concerned and in the cbk Dordrecht. On the back of the memory game (invitation) the project logo is depicted as a pattern. The logo, as well as the font, refers to streets. (street pattern and street name signs).

Due to the enormous diversity of works, it was decided to divide the works into two categories: ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. On the ground floor, the theme ‘inside’ (interiors, portraits). The works hang together like a ‘cloud’. This way of hanging refers to the way of hanging works of art in the 19th century. This creates an intimate atmosphere, which allows the works to come into their own.

On the first floor, the theme ‘outside’. The works are positioned on a horizontal line. From left to right, the story is visualized from seascapes that transition to landscapes over the countryside to the first landscapes about urbanization.

Window lettering, texts on walls, information booklet about the exhibition, and nameplates provide information about the exhibition, ensure recognition of the project style and bring the exhibition into balance. For children, Studio Renate Boere has developed a treasure hunt (in the garden of the cbk), a digital memory game and a drawing competition in collaboration with the cbk Dordrecht and the Dordrecht Museum.
