About the posters

You don’t often have time and space for autonomous projects. We were particularly pleased with the invitation from the Grafische Werkplaats The Hague to participate in the unique exhibition ‘The Hague Creative City’, together with 27 designers and artists from The Hague.

About the Design

‘Voelen of doen’ is inspired by a statement by psychotherapist Esther Perel during her episode of Zomergasten (September 2, 2018, VPRO). In this broadcast Perel explains, among other things, that the difference between animals and people is that we have the ability to imagine. By closing our eyes we can conjure up images that do not exist, but in which we can rely on our feelings.

Based on this theory, the image of ‘Voelen of doen’ was created. By combining images from magazines, newspapers and advertising brochures, new visual stories are created that can evoke a specific feeling.

‘Creëren of consumeren’ was created following a lecture by Bas Haring in which he gave an inspiring talk about the book: ‘Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ (1974) by Robert Pirsig. Roughly speaking, he said, we can divide humanity into two groups: one half are the people who want to tinker and tinker with life, the other half are those who don’t or don’t want to.

‘Creëren of consumeren’ is at the center of this theory and is part of the exhibition ‘The Hague Creative City’ in the Poster Gallery The Hague. What is special about De Affiche Galerij is that it is located directly below the shoppers, in the underground tram station designed by Rem Koolhaas, in the heart of The Hague. A perfect location to ask the question ‘Create or consume’.

“By closing our eyes we can conjure up images that do not exist, but in which we can rely on our feelings.”
