About the book

It is a special book that  Joncquil has created. With the help of graphic designer  Renate Boere and her employee Silke Kuilman, he bundled the seven texts that were written by guest writers during the Re-Rotterdam manifestation in his ‘office’ from 6 to 10 February 2013. In this way, Joncquil did not attune the neutral, businesslike space to his art, but attune his artistic intervention as  ‘CQ Holding’ to the office.

About the Design

The typographical framework chosen was the design of the manual for Polaroid cameras, from which the A6 format was also derived. The narrow columns were inspired by the black stripes that dominated the system walls of the Rotterdam office space. Joncquil is fascinated by the process of a self-developing film and by looming and disappearing images. With Polaroid photos, one can influence the development process by rubbing the film so that a magical colour miracle takes place.

This action is also necessary in Joncquil’s book if one wants to take in its entire content. Then a lot of rubbing must be done to discover the images on the cover – which are hidden under a thick layer of black ink. Part of the publication, produced in an edition of 150 copies, is a set of Polaroid photos taken by the participating guest writers. The connection between the magic of the Polaroid and the magic of this book is thus strengthened.

“Joncquil’s fascination with self-developing film influenced the book’s interactive cover.”

“The book transforms the reading experience into an interactive, visual discovery.”

Colophon

This publication was developed during and in response to the exhibition CQ Holding, at the art fair RE: Rotterdam 2013. CQ Holding is a total installation of work and environment in which the interaction between maker and viewer is central. As ‘employees’ of the Holding, Joncquil invited 6 writers and a designer to work in the office for half a day. He asked them to write about the installation they were in and at the end of the day to make a polaroid that summarizes the space for them.
