About the movement

While the first world war was raging through Europe, destroying moral and hope, a small group of Zürich-based artists decided that it was time for resistance. Anger, disbelief and fear led these artists to form a group. They grabbed a knife and stuck it in a dictionary, picking the first word that was pierced by the blade, thus naming their new born art statement: Dadaism.

This ambitious group of writers, painters, dancers, musicians and performers form the origin of the Dada-movement. They believed that they could save society of modern (war)logics and reason by bestowing them with anarchism, nihilism and primitivism in art.

Dadaism spread itself through Europe and overseas by printed magazines containing art and essays about Dada. The first text published about Dada was the Dada Manifesto by Hugo Ball:

‘An International word. Just a word, and the word a movement. Very easy to understand. Quite terribly simple.(…) How does one achieve eternal bliss? By saying dada. How does one become famous? By saying dada.’

About the Design

That the Dada movement and their way of thinking are still relevant in 2019, has been proven by 29 driven students of the Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam, during a two-week workshop supervised by Renate Boere and Quirine Dob. Each student has been busy collecting and reflecting, cutting and pasting, merging and looking, scanning and improving their 20 analogue collages. With these collages they have published a book, organized an exhibition and given a performance to conclude the workshop as the true Dadaists of today.
