About the exhibition
Thirty artists have been selected for this exhibition, whose work provides a representative picture of the state of contemporary painting in the Netherlands.
The exhibition arose from the need that was noticed among a broad public, to have an overview of painting again. What is contemporary painting? What is going on and what has presented itself in the breadth of contemporary painting in recent years? The curators of the exhibition, Moniek Peters and Gerrit Willems, realize that presenting a state of affairs is a daring undertaking. On the one hand, with What’s Up! they want to show the work of artists who are still at the beginning of their careers, but can already count on recognition for their work. On the other hand, they want to make an appreciative and critical choice from the wide range – and possibly show a few surprises – of artists who are still relatively unknown. Ultimately, they managed to find a nice balance; showing only surprises would not be an overview, only the most shown artists would not be a state of affairs. With the state of affairs, as it will now be presented, both an inventory and an account will be drawn up.

“The exhibition arose from the need that was noticed among a broad public, to have an overview of painting again.”
