Since 2011, De Monsterkamer has been interviewing designers about paper. What is their favorite paper, what are their sources of inspiration and how do they see the future of paper? The questions are always the same, the answers surprising.
Can you give an example of a design you created where paper plays a special or very functional role?
In almost all the books I designed, the paper tells something about the content of the book. In one design, the paper – or rather; the transience of wood-containing paper – took the lead role. It was the design for the publication Toegepaste ervaring.
Reality is experienced at every moment of the day, and everyone experiences that concept in their own way, from a personal perspective. With Applied Reality, gallery Heden from The Hague presented a number of artists for whom the reality of everyday life is not only a source of inspiration, but also the work itself. This makes it not applied art, but reality applied.
I also wanted to respond to this theme with my design and decided to look for the most wood-containing paper at that time. That was not so easy. Paper suppliers did not understand the idea and did not want to send paper.
Everything about the importance of paper for the designs of Studio Renate Boere can be read in ‘Renate Boere on Paper’. From Monday 18 May the interview can be found in its entirety on the website of the Monsterkamer.
