About the DaDa movement
As World War I ravaged Europe, destroying morale and hope, a small group of Swiss artists decided it was time for a counter-movement. Driven by fear, anger, and disbelief, these artists came together. They picked up a knife, stabbed it into a dictionary, and chose the first word it pierced as the name for their new art movement: Dada.
This ambitious group of writers, painters, dancers, musicians, and performers laid the foundation for the Dada movement. They believed they could free society from the modern (war) logic and the doom thinking of the citizens by bombarding them with anarchism, nihilism, and primitive art.
Dadaism spread across Europe through printed materials in the form of booklets and flyers. The first publication on Dadaism was the Dada Manifesto (1916) by Hugo Ball: “An international word. Just a word, and the word a movement. Very easy to understand. Quite terribly simple. (…) How does one achieve eternal bliss? By saying Dada. How does one become famous? By saying Dada.”
About the Design
The relevance of the Dada movement and its way of thinking was demonstrated by dedicated students from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam during two-week workshops led by Renate Boere and Quirine Dob. Each student engaged in collecting and reflecting, cutting and pasting, merging and observing, scanning and enhancing their 20 analog collages.
In true Dadaist style, students designed a book, organized an exhibition, and performed to conclude each workshop. Studio Renate Boere has published several books within the Dada series, such as ‘Beyond Dada’, ‘I Want to Dada You’, ‘Dada Revisited’ and ‘Call Me Dada’. The Dada workshop fosters a playful and adventurous spirit among participants, inviting them to explore the principles of Dadaism through hands-on activities that challenge conventional thinking and celebrate creative anarchy.

“Each student engaged in collecting and reflecting, cutting and pasting, merging and observing, scanning and enhancing their 20 analog collages.”
