About the book

Every woman in Klarenbeek who has become a mother may plant a fruit tree of her own choice in her garden. The fruit trees will make the neighbourhood less anonymous with a reference to these typical Zeeland landscape elements. A personal connection will be created between the trees and the people who plant them, because the tree is connected to an important event in the lives of the residents of Klarenbeek. The selected fruit trees will make Klarenbeek a fragrant, blooming neighbourhood and the children of Klarenbeek can harvest the harvest at different times of the year. Birthe Leemeijer hopes that the children, just like her, will have a garden in their minds to think back to and will taste the flavour of freshly picked cherries, plums, apples and pears in their mouths.

On 27 January 2011, a booklet was handed over to all residents of Klarenbeek, to support the project and to continue after the unveiling. It contains poems about the garden, drawings by Rie Cramer and an adventure by Dik Trom. These can be used by mothers to read aloud and to apply the concept. In addition, there are descriptions of types of fruit that thrive in Zeeland.

About the Design

The map at the back shows where the chosen trees have been planted and new trees can be added using the sticker sheet. In addition, a tile has been specially made to hang on the facade of the house, in addition to the booklet.

The booklet can be hung in the meter cupboard so that it remains part of the homes in Klarenbeek for a long time.

“This initiative aims to make the neighborhood less anonymous by connecting trees to the residents' significant life events.”

“The project fosters a sense of belonging and continuity by encouraging mothers to read aloud and engage with their children.”
