About the book

For the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag we had a beautiful assignment to design a book for the exhibition of: ‘Van Rembrandt tot Damien Hirst, De anatomische les’. The green color on the front page refers to the green blanket that they use in the operation room nowadays. When you open the book you will find the famous painting of Rembrandt on which a skull is cut open. The next page you will see the whole painting with its background information. The works of art in the book are dissected like the topic revealed.

Colophon

The publication is being published on the occasion of the exhibition The Anatomy Lesson – from Rembrandt to Damien Hirst , on display at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag from 28 September 2013 to 5 January 2014.

This publication and the exhibition were made possible in part by the financial support of pharmaceutical company Roche Nederland.

Cover design by Renate Boere of a detail of the painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Jan Deijman (1656) by Rembrandt from the collection of the Amsterdam Museum (front) and a detail of the installation The Primacy of Matter over Thought (2013) by Folkert de Jong (back).
