About the book
‘Food Design’ by Katja Gruijters is the first comprehensive exploration of food consumption, industry, and sustainable development through the lens of design. Unlike conventional food design books that focus primarily on aesthetics, this work offers a unique, integrated approach, encouraging readers to become more aware of what they eat and the broader implications of food creation.
The book presents a captivating overview of 35 richly illustrated projects, events, and products, contextualized within the dynamic world of food. Through these examples, Gruijters aims to inspire anyone interested in food to engage more deeply with the fascinating world of food creation and sustainability.
About the Design
Studio Renate Boere’s visual communication in ‘Food Design’ aims to highlight Katja Gruijters’s experimental approach and her significant contributions to rethinking sustainability in the food industry while challenging current beliefs about eating habits. The communicative design demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary collaborations among designers, writers, and activists in bringing the topic of food consumption and sustainability to the forefront of public awareness.
Emphasizing the design process, Studio Renate Boere worked closely with Katja Gruijters to select photographs that narratively showcase her experimental approach to food creation. This visual storytelling provides an in-depth look at Gruijters’s visionary experiments. Typography-wise, the book is structured to differentiate the main text about sustainability from the 35 projects, offering more than just a list of successful endeavors; it provides insight into the food designer’s conscientious considerations. The main texts are subtly displayed on white, paper-imitated boxes overlaid on photos, while the projects feature bold titles and more expressive layouts. This design solution underscores the importance of the creative process and experiments over theoretical research, which is the essence of Gruijters’s working method.
The front cover features a photo taken in a laboratory, encapsulating Gruijters’s profession and evoking questions about the future of food production and processing methods. The vibrant pale pinkish-orange shape on the cover draws attention to the featured photo and refers to the Pretzel path—a concept Gruijters uses to describe the continuous interplay between her personal interventions and institutional work, enriching her knowledge and range of inspiration.
