About the book

‘A Painter’s Play’ explores the interplay between painting and theater through the work of Andrea Freckmann, who not only directs her artwork but also performs within it. This bilingual publication, released in honor of Freckmann’s solo exhibition represented by Galerie Maurits van der Laar at Art Rotterdam, offers a unique glimpse into her artistic journey.

Over the years, Freckmann has evolved from an observational painter to a storyteller. The book is structured like a theatrical performance, with a catalog at the end divided into three acts, guiding the viewer through the artist’s growth and development. ‘A Painter’s Play’ presents a rich narrative that intertwines visual art with the dramatic elements, celebrating the dynamic and multifaceted nature of Freckmann’s work.

About the Design

Through the design of ‘A Painter’s Play’, Studio Renate Boere reflects the theatrical essence of Andrea Freckmann’s paintings. Drawing inspiration from the original scripts of the Commedia dell’ Arte, the design emphasizes balance, mirroring the artist’s own pursuits and the fundamental principles of this form of theatre.

The book itself acts as a stage, presenting multiple perspectives on Freckmann’s paintings. Contributors including a theater maker, poet, art historian, and the artist herself are strategically placed within the golden ratio (the human measure), where the text performs as the play and the images serve as backstage props. The cover design further sets the stage for this artistic journey, encapsulating the playful and exploratory spirit that defines Freckmann’s art.

“The book acts as a stage, with the text as a performer and the images as props.”

“The cover design encapsulates the playful and exploratory spirit that defines Freckmann’s art.”
