About the prize

‘Christie van der Haak. Sproken’ was designed by concept-driven design studio Renate Boere. Renate Boere translated Christie van der Haak’s world of experience into a visual fairy tale of 416 pages with the aim of showing the paintings and the often previously unseen patterns ‘applied’ in virtual spaces. Endless possibilities with Christie’s work reveal themselves to the reader.

Today Christie receives the Ouborg Prize for her oeuvre that is of great significance both locally and (inter)nationally. The Ouborg Prize consists of a sum of money, a book and an exhibition in the Gemeente Museum.

The book is printed in an edition of 1000 copies. 65 copies are provided with a unique Christie for sale for 50 euros. All unique items were sold out immediately during the opening.

At the back of the book, her best work is shown in chronological order per series. More than 500 works – not even a fifth of all her work – give a wonderful overview of Christie van der Haak’s development to date: from painter to installation artist.

On 27 November, visual artist Christie van der Haak will be awarded the Ouborg Prize 2015 for her large and rich oeuvre. The official presentation of the prize will be accompanied by the publication of Sproken / Fairy Tales, a richly illustrated book designed by Studio Renate Boere and published by Stroom Den Haag / Jap Sam Books, and the opening of the exhibition Sproken / Fairy Tales in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

The Ouborg Prize jury appreciates Christie van der Haak’s versatility, the convincing way in which she moves with her work on the border between art and design, in which she uses a variety of materials and techniques, and in which she knows how to transfer her unwavering inspiration and passion to others.

Jury chairman Arno van Roosmalen:a

“Recently, Christie van der Haak’s work Heda (2015) was on display at the important international fair Design Miami / Basel. It attracted the interest of collectors from all over the world. In 2013, Van der Haak’s work was already on display at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. On the occasion of the exhibition Delfts Wit – Het is niet alles Blauw dat in Delft blinkt she designed an installation that provided the perfect ambiance for the Delfts Wit. In the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Van der Haak created an impressive style room as part of the exhibition Schilderkunst op drift (Painting Art Adrift) (2014). And she was recently given free rein by Museum De Lakenhal and designed Nieuw Leids Laken, which will be put into production when this museum in Leiden reopens. This selection from the recent past illustrates Christie van der Haak’s reach, both geographically and institutionally.

And it is precisely those motives, the quality of the oeuvre and its local and (inter)national importance, on the basis of which the Ouborg Prize is awarded to artists from The Hague. If the jury was therefore convincingly unanimous in awarding the Ouborg Prize 2015 to Christie van der Haak, that conviction was further strengthened by the appreciation for the enormously inspiring and stimulating influence that she, as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Art, has had on generations of visual artists.”

About the Design

In the book, each virtual room created by Studio Renate Boere introduces the ‘visitor’ in a new fairy tale. You walk through a number of spaces, decorated with patterns and painting by Christie van der Haak. Consequently you ‘enter into’ a painting followed by a family of similar paintings on full-page format. After the last painting the visitor leaves the painting family.

Text pages are rimmed with a pattern referring to the traditional fairy tale books and at the same time show the richness, variety and uniqueness of Van der Haak’s patterns. It can be viewed as a sample book for future work and an inspiration for anyone interested in patterns. The back of the book features a timeline of Christie van der Haak’s best work. It provides a wonderful overview of Van der Haak’s development so far, from paintings to installation art.

An extraordinary exhibition was the direct result of this book. Inspired by the virtual rooms inside the book Christie van der Haak found the courage to fully cover the rooms of the Gemeentemuseum with her patterns. A major new work emerged. The virtual rooms from the book came to life.
